Culture of Madhya Pradesh


Culture of Madhya Pradesh is heavily influenced by indigenous traditions and customs of the tribes inhabiting a large portion of the state. And these three distinct tribes namely Gond tribe, Bhil tribe and Oraon tribe, among which the Gonds were the major dominating and they belong to the ruling clan.

It is also a pleasant amalgamation of Hindus, Jains, Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, and Sikhs. Music and the folk songs have contributed a lot towards the distinctive culture of the state. The most famous music of the people is the Relo Folk song belonging to the Sing Maria and Muria tribes and it is usually sung by the tribal children.

Dhankul songs and Chait Parah are even popular in the state. Flute and harmonium are used majority by the musicians. Another notable feature adding to the culture of the people is their art work which is of unique charm.

The works of art include bamboo and cane coverings, carpet weaving, durries, folk paintings, iron crafts, jute works, metal crafts, ornaments, Papier Mache, stone carving, stuffed toys, terracotta, textile weaving, woodcraft and Zari embroidery.

Hindi language is the main and the official language of Madhya Pradesh. Some other local language, such as Bundelkhandi, Malwi and Chhattisgarhi language are spoken all over the state.

In dress, Lehenga and Choli are the most famous traditional dress among women in Madhya Pradesh. Odhni is a kind of scarf that covers the head and shoulders and is an essential element of traditional dress. Black and Red colors are the most popular colors in clothes.

Dhoti is the famous traditional dress for men in Madhya Pradesh. It is comfortable and best for summer months. Safa, a kind of turban is another co mmon element of the traditional dress of men here.
