Climate of South India


The region has a tropical climate and depends on monsoons for rainfall.

The region – which includes Karnataka, inland Tamil Nadu and western Andhra Pradesh – gets between 400 and 750 millimetres (15.7 and 29.5 in) of rainfall annually, with hot summers and dry winters with temperatures around 20–24 °C (68–75 °F).

The months between March and May are hot and dry, with mean monthly temperatures hovering around 32 °C (90 °F), with 320 millimetres (13 in) precipitation. Without artificial irrigation, this region is not suitable for agriculture

Tropical Climate of south India - In relevance to Tamil Nadu.

The state of Tamil Nadu has a tropical climate, with little difference between the summer and winter temperature. Convincingly April and May are the hottest months of the year. During the summers temperature shoots up to 40 degrees centigrade and above. Coastal regions too get hot and humid during these months.

This temperature continues from March to the end of October. Finally the temperature change gradually occurs from July to End of October. Here the Days are hot while the nights are relatively cool.

Undoubtedly the areas that lie in the foothills of the ghats have equable temperature. A pleasant climate can be experienced from November to End of February.

The minimum temperature during these months revolves round 20 degrees centigrade. However, in the hill stations the temperature falls down to a minimum of 5 degrees centigrade, with some fluctuations. October to December is the time of the monsoons.

Climate of south India - In relevance to Karnataka

Karnataka in southern India experience a better climate as compared to the other south Indian states. Knowingly the climate of the state is typical tropical type. The central and northern parts of the state experience hot weather during the months of April and May.

The temperature during these months records around 35 degrees centigrade. Winter falls in the month of November and continues till February. June to September is the time of the rainy season that dominates the climate of the state. Finally the western coast gets 1500 mm of rainfall during the months of June and July.

Climate of south India - In relevance to Kerala.

The state of Kerala remains pleasant for most part of the year. Understandably It also has a tropical climate. April to June is the summer time, with the maximum temperature remaining around 33 degrees centigrade. The monsoon season begins in the month of June and continues till September. Most importantly Not much difference is experienced though.

Humidity, however, increases during the period and rainfalls can continue for a couple of days at a stretch. The month of October marks the start of winter season. Temperature during this season remains around 20 degrees centigrade.

Climate of south India - In relevance to Andhra Pradesh and Telangana

In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana the summer season extends from March to June. During these months, the maximum temperature in most parts of the state records around 35 degrees centigrade.

The coastal plains, however, get too hot during the summer season. Consequently the temperature reaching a high of 45 degrees centigrade st some places.

Undoubtedly In the plateau region, summers are cooler. October to February is the time of the winter season. The minimum temperature ranges between 10 and 12 degrees centigrade. Winter is colder in the plateau regions. Monsoons arrive in the month of July, continuing till September.
